Top 10 Surf Spots for Intermediate or Advanced Surfers on Auckland's West Coast in 2025
Believe it or not, Karioitahi had more perfect surf days than Piha in 2025! Here are the other West Coast spots you should know about.

Auckland West Coast for Intermediate or Advanced Surfers
Looking for the best waves on Auckland's West Coast? We crunched an entire year's worth of surf data to find out which spots are firing the most number of days in 2025.
These rankings are based on 365 days of real forecasted conditions at every break. Today we'll be looking at two factors:
- How many days had 3 or more hours of "good" surf
- How many days had 3 or more hours of perfect surf (perfect wave size and perfect winds for ideal conditions)
For Intermediate & Advanced: Where the Good Stuff Is
Muriwai Beach topped the list with good surf on 245 days—that's 67% of the year. But here's what's wild: the top 9 spots are all incredibly close, ranging from 245 down to 237 good days. That's basically a week's difference over an entire year.
Top spots for intermediate/advanced:
- Muriwai Beach - 245 good days, 131 perfect days
- Muriwai Rimmers - 242 good days, 128 perfect days
- Maori Bay - 242 good days, 121 perfect days
- Anawhata - 240 good days, 131 perfect days
- Whites - 239 good days, 134 perfect days
- Karioitahi - 238 good days, 138 perfect days (most on the coast!)
- Bethells - 238 good days, 127 perfect days
- Piha - 237 good days, 136 perfect days
- O'Neills Bay - 237 good days, 126 perfect days
- Whatipu - 225 good days, 128 perfect days
What this means: When people say "Piha's the best," they're not wrong—but Karioitahi had more perfect days than anywhere on the entire coast. The West Coast is ridiculously consistent. You've got options basically every other day of the year.
The Hidden Gems
Anawhata flies under the radar but absolutely delivers—240 good days and 131 perfect days. The gnarly access keeps crowds manageable.
Karioitahi is a bit of a mission from central Auckland, but those 138 perfect days speak for themselves. More than Piha. More than Muriwai. More than anywhere.
The Bottom Line
The West Coast delivered 200+ surfable days last year at most spots. The only way you miss out is if you're not paying attention. I hope this helps you score more waves in 2026! Thanks for reading 🤙
